Flat. That's about the best way to describe this series. It fell flat of expectations, unless you used season 5 of the first Vikings to set your bar.
When I first heard of this series, I was thinking great, they aren't going to try to continue the broken storyline of season 5 and 6 and are rebooting. Lief Erikson si going to be the main character? Maybe they'll build him up like Ragnar and we will follow him from Greenland and see his ambitions.
Instead, it feels like we picked up with one of Ragnars less interesting sons. Erik the Red sounds like he would have had a more compelling story to follow. He apparently taught Leif everything he knows. Everyone remembers Erik the Red. But we don't get to meet him, we just get the less memorable Leif.
And maybe Leif would be more interesting if he was believable. People are upset about the minority female Jarl. I didn't even flinch at that point. She seems to be a good actress and made me believe she was the jarl. Sam Collet, on the other hand, makes the character about as interesting as peeling vegetables. I understand Travis Fimmel (ragnar) is a difficult person to replace as a lead for a show. The man could just do a half smile and the whole scene would come alive. You'd believe he was really Ragnar. The dynamic with Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) was awesome. She, Rollo, and Floki all stood out in season 1. Not to mention Aethelstan and other minor characters that made the whole show believable. But Sam feels like casting Jared Leto as the joker.
After fight scenes, I still wasn't convinced he could fight because the actor looks like he'd struggle to carry a gallon of milk with one hand. If he worked out for this role, I'd hate to see what he looked like before. I don't think the real Leif was known for being a warrior, so maybe they should have went that route if they kept the same actor. He has no emotional range and does not make me care about him. At the end, when he is shirtless, flexing, and doing a war cry, I really felt more annoyed than ready for season 2.
Harald Sigurdson and King Canute (though his accent sounded like he was from Transylvania) were the two most interesting characters. Everyone else is relatively forgettable. I'm only interested in seeing what happens with those two going forward and if the rest disappeared from the storyline, I don't think I'd even notice. That's probably more the writing than anything though.
