In all honesty — the cinematographer was the real MVP. This movie was a collection of beautiful imagery and lighting (though I could never get my bearings with the amount of close ups.) The overall subject matter is great as this is a necessary story to be told. However, the means by which the story was told was incredibly boring and underwhelming. I almost nodded off several times because most of the movie is Fonny and Tish staring at each other. And apparently, staring and occasionally saying nice things to each other are the core signs of a deep and true love.
I never got a sense of who Tish really was. She seemed so new to life, which makes sense because she’s young. But it was incredibly hard to develop a sense of closeness to her character.
On top of this, I don’t think any of the plot lines in the movie were wrapped up. What happened to Fonny’s family? What happened to the cop? Or the woman who escaped to Puerto Rico? What were the terms of the plea deal? Did any of this affect the lawyer in any way? Did the dads ever get caught for stealing?
Needless to say, this was not my favorite movie. I’m a little perplexed by critic reviews
