The film has great mise-en-scène with beautiful cinematography, sets and costumes. The music was also pretty good and catchy. But the plot, direction and acting were a mess. The film felt more like different music videos smashed together with small skits and filler in between. There were many scenes and ideas that were set up yet never completed or brought up again in the film. Furthermore, the plot was difficult to follow with many of the music scenes thrown in places where don't fit or make sense. For example a scene will happen then it will cut to a music video that had no relation to the previous scene. Moreover the time progression was terrible with it being difficult to tell what age or grade the characters were supposed to be. Regarding the characters, there really wasn't any character development nor did I really feel for any of the characters. Plus, much of the acting by the major characters was really bad with a few decent performances. Melanie Martinez should have featured someone else to play the part of Crybaby because she can not act. Her lines were delivered flat and monotone. Not the mention, the dialogue wasn't very good or interesting. This all leaves the film filled with plot holes that makes the 'cliffhanger' ending lackluster and leaves more questions rather than answers. Such as 'why didn't Crybaby just use her powers when she needed to' 'Why can't they leave, if they have been outside on their own before (it would make more sense if they had guards stopping them but there's no mention of this) yet they could just run away at the end?' 'Where did crybaby's powers come from, what are its limits?' Etc.
