It's got a unique sense of humor all of its own that uses a lot of character-based comedy - which means it gets funnier the more you watch.
And there's actually a lot of instances where the writing, editing, and direction is really good and envokes emotions of awe instead of just hilarity - the episode "Star in Yellow" and the "Equestrian Primates Teaser". I think this guy could apply those skills as a director in the future.
If I were to compare it to anything, I'd say it's like "It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia" but with female ponies... with male voices. Everyone is a horrible, twisted, adult version of themselves, poking holes of the original cartoon while also making fun of themselves making fun of the show.
