When the trailer dropped for this, film, my first reaction was, "this is going to split the fan base!" and it duly did.
The problem with Bowie is that his career was so diverse and expansive that you could never fit everything into just a couple of hours and hit each element of his fan base. Essentially, this film was always going to be embraced by sone whilst disappointing others.
There is a heavy focus on Ziggy early on. Maybe too much? Some of the footage is repeated as well which, considering Brett Morgan was given access to the entire archives, seems a bit of a let down. A great deal of the other footage was stuff that is already freely available. However, the highlight of the entire film was the previously unreleased David Hemmings footage from Earls Court in 1978. It appears the full concert may yet see the light of day. Hopefully sooner than later.
A nice touch I also found enticing was that Bowie’s own voice narrates the film. You are made to feel as though he is guiding you through his life as a performer. I felt this was very well done.
Look, Moonage Daydream is a cracking effort by Brett Morgan to bring together the career of the most influential artist of our time. It's not going to be for everyone but it's worth the effort if you are indecisive and thinking twice about watching it.
I have been a Bowie fan for 32 years and am not sure I could have enjoyed Moonage Daydream much more than I have after half a dozen viewings. No doubt, I will be seeing it many more times in the years to come.
