This Mulan was a disappointment. My family and I were so excited to see a reimagined Mulan story, even without the iconic songs and Mushu. The new Muln doesn’t build relationships based on trust with her comrades nor were her comrades given any characterization, let alone growth. This movie threw away Mulan’s individual character growth and agency, giving her iconic powerful lines to random side characters - ultimately making the story fall flat. 90% of the movie was replacing her growth as a warrior with magic- making her special for being born a certain way, rather than emphasizing how her dedication and determination made her a leader. Her iconic end scene with her father was replaced with a cheap imitation of the importance of her family bonds, and diminished them throughout the movie. Little girls could look up to the old Mulan as a hero that proved that anyone can make a difference with out of the box thinking and determination. With this movie, they can only hope they will get lucky and scrap through tough scenarios- or born with superpowers.
