This movie misunderstood literally EVERYTHING that made the first Home Alone so endearing. It was all based around the relationship of Kevin and his mom, and how Kevin feels about his home. At the beginning of the film, Kevin and his mom aren't getting along and Kevin hates his house because he feels unwelcomed in his own home. Through the course of the movie, Kevin realizes how much he needs and loves his mom and how much his home means to him and how important it is to protect it. It is an emotional journey, and the traps/gags are actually there for action and comic relief.
The flimsy plot and family scenes that occur in Home Sweet Home Alone are just excuses to string together the next segment of poorly-conceived slapstick gags that the filmmakers think is all we want out of a Home Alone movie. It has no actual heart. As a kid you watch the original and identify with Kevin, then when you rewatch it as an adult you identify with Kevin's mom and the movie is just as powerful. In this movie... you end up identifying with or caring about no one. It is a lazy cashgrab that simply thinks it can trick you into enjoying it based solely off nostalgia and Ellie Kemper's general likeableness.
