75% Michael Bay does Star Wars, 20% decent Star Wars, 5% shameless, obvious, badly handled pandering.
Visually, it is outstanding, but it's basically all style and no substance. Up until the final act you are just battered by a neverending barrage of awesome yet hollow action sequences, that flash by too fast for you to properly digest them and leave you ultimately feeling unfulfilled (Like a Michael Bay film).
The final act is pretty much spot on, felt exactly like a Star Wars film should. The characters finally made sense and the pace slowed down to let you process what was going on. That last third/quarter of the film was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it, great story beats and near flawless execution, with a pretty acceptable conclusion..
And they should have ended it with that, but instead, we're treated to an epilogue parade of sickeningly obsequious fan service in a blatant attempt to rectify anything in the past people have complained about, that just robs the final act of it's dramatic ending.
I went in hoping for the best, and left disappointed and dissatisfied. This is the worst of all the Star Wars films (and I include the Ewok adventures among that list).
So sad.
