As a huge musical theatre fan (who can be very critical if it’s not done right), I was worried going into this movie after reading all the negative reviews. I love the Broadway show, and I LOVED this film!! Deeply and truly. I so appreciate how they kept it simple and focused on the story and the talent. No razzle dazzle needed. It’s a beautiful story about social anxiety and the consequences of desperate poor choices, with heart wrenchingly beautiful songs which were delivered with raw heart, up close and personal in the film version. Ben Platt didn’t disappoint- and he showed great restraint and control in his performance- acting for a camera is completely different than playing for the back of the house in the theatre. Also! I loved the two new songs better than expected. They really added to the story, and brought some closure. Great choices all around. I only cried 5 times 😌. See it! Form your own opinions.
