The key to enjoying this movie is to not compare it to the original. I will admit, I was pretty disappointed when I first heard that there would be some different characters, less of a comedic aspect, and no songs. That being said, Disney has repeatedly stated that this movie was trying to honor the original Chinese tale of Mulan while incorporating true aspects of Chinese culture. For example, they excluded the character of Mushu. I was sad about this since Mushu was one of my favorite characters, but after learning that the dragon is one of high importance to Chinese culture, I understood that they didn’t wan’t to disrespect that by making it comical. The visual effects incorporated were also appealing. That being said, the storyline could have been improved, as well as the character development.
Furthermore, I appreciate the effort Disney took to make sure that the lead actress who played Mulan was actually of Chinese decent. I wish they would’ve done the same for the live action version of Aladdin with Jasmine.
On a side note, people complain that Disney puts no effort into live action remakes storyline wise since they are the same as the original. This one had some key differences, so those who claim that the remakes, “follow the exact same storyline,” should presumably be happy this one has some qualities unalike the original.
Overall, both movies are great in differing aspects, and I love how empowering they are in breaking patriarchic beliefs. The original Mulan will always have a soft spot in my heart, but this one was special in its own way.
