Brutal, intense, uncompromising with glimmers of hope and spirit amidst extreme adversity, brutality and bigotry - a film so real in atrocity that is unfortunately not consigned to history - beautifully filmed whilst very difficult to watch - I would recommend this film in the way I would recommend 12 years a slave - it is the most important film of the year but might be difficult for many to watch. The spirit of the main character and the reality of her emotion drives the film - you want her to have her revenge, but you never trust that world to give it to her. A beautiful exploration of the complexity of relationship between disparate groups crushed and oppressed by the same colonial power - an important film to watch against the current backdrop of nationalism, racism, exploitation and a re-invigorated ruling class of bigots across the west.
