One of the many egregious failings of this slog of a book is Grisham's insulting attitude towards police. Every single police officer whether at the state or local level, is presented as an incompetent fool, incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, and unwilling to lift a finger to solve the crime. A poorly constructed side character named Bob Cobb also goes on an uninterrupted diatribe against the police, under the pretense that he's a disgruntled ex-con. And yes Grisham's ongoing man crush on the morally bankrupt book-selling protagonist is uncomfortable at best.
