It was a wonderful love story. Gena Rowlands was a credible Allie. But in the care facility when Noah & Allie were both there years later, James Garner as an older Noah (or Ryan Gosling) bothered me. It was confusing because I could not see his as Noah! James Garner is more like After Allie had one of her short remembrances (the one as they had wine, and danced by candle light, after which she relapsed again and panicked) fleeting photos shown like the passage of time... which showed versions of a younger (Noah, with various versions of a younger Allie. James Garner never looked anything like Ryan Gosling at any age!! James Garner has very dark hair and completely different features than Gosling... even if Gosling was supposed to be depicted as 60ish years old, Garner was a poor match for the part, especially in those photos. Garner is a good actor, but not for this part. He reminds me more of James Marsden. Garner was and Marsden is a completely different kind of handsome than Gosling is. Just saying.
