We had planned to watch it over the weekend โ four episodes on Saturday and the remaining four on Sunday. In the end, though, around 2 a.m., we had finished all eight episodes of Istanbul Encyclopaedia and opened a bottle of wine to discuss it a little.
The performances were outstanding. I don't think I can single anyone out โ every actor delivered a "masterpiece" in these deeply psychological roles, with dialogues so beautifully written.
The direction was equally excellent, showcasing a particularly captivating blend of stylistic influences.
I donโt want to go into too much detail. Istanbul Encyclopaedia is a brilliant allegory of the schizophrenia that permeates Turkish society today, shaped by the tension between the secular state founded by Kemal Atatรผrk on one hand, and the powerful resurgence of religion in daily life on the other.
The existential struggle of young people seeking identity and harmony amid these conflicting cultural forces is portrayed masterfully โ with depth, authenticity, and, most importantly, without a hint of didacticism.
I am truly glad to see so many Turkish artists confronting history head-on, with a critical eye, yet without grandiose language or preaching.
