Madagascar has never been a musical, and it has never claimed to be. While it has music in each film, and musical elements, it's not primarily based on music and has no emphasis on the soundtrack. This album, if you'd call it that, represents that fact in full. While there are many original, contemporary songs, few are remarkable to any degree; they're prop music. The orchestrated OST, is not dissimilar in that it could appear in any movie. There isn't anything about it that makes it particular to "Escape 2 Africa." Most would agree the highlights to the album were the unoriginal songs that play throughout the movie that weren't written for the soundtrack, such as Boston's "More Than A Feeling." But if the best parts of the soundtracks were the pre-released tracks, one could simply buy that album or single rather than the soundtrack. One might expect, given the star cast of musically talented individuals, such as David Schwimmer and Will.I.Am, that the soundtrack may hold up on its own. However, nobody would ever intend to listen to most of this music outside of the context of the film. Therefore, This album gets a negative review from me.
