I don't know of a more under-rated and under appreciated film. I don't think it could have been better cast. The lighting,sets, and landscapes convey the ambiance of the region. The plot perfectly reflects the Spanish ethos. If you want to understand the Spanish trait "pundonor", study this movie, especially Gregory Peck's character and that of the little boy. From beginning to end there is a series of vignettes that are perfect of people and place.
