I found it really fell short on a lot of things for me. I like the character interaction. The sarcasm, the underlying sexuality, the playful prose. For me, the problem was that beyond character interaction and word play, there was not a lot to be enjoyed. The story just isn't that good! Dialogue and scenes seem like they must be building to something (that's what all good books do), and in the end it provided a flat and completely forgettable ending. For me, it also failed to establish any sort of memorable haunt. There were some brooding moments, and some chapters that utilized dread quite well, but they all fell as flat as the ending when they failed to materialize anything to sink my teeth into, so to speak.
I expected better because this novella has been appearing at the top of several "best of horror" lists. In the end, I don't think it even belongs in the top 100. Rarely are movies better than books. The sin is really not the story's but they hype, I suppose. Either way, you'll get a better story out of the silver screens, or just about any other book.
