Most of the reviews I've read have focused on how Captain Marvel is a feminist icon. Women seem to rate this movie better than it actually is. However, the point of superheroes is to inspire. If little girls walk away feeling inspired, and good about themselves because of this movie, that's wonderful.
My honest opinion of the movie isnt so great for about 20 different reasons. Personally, I rank Captain Marvel in the bottom 3 of all Marvel movies. However I dont want to ruin it for the many people who may enjoy it. Especially the little girls. I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10, as a movie, in general. But that doesnt mean your daughters will.
My biggest issue with the movie is that it seems like a big screen copy of the CWs Supergirl. In both cases you have alien heroes who grew up on earth. Both are blatantly being pushed as female icons and the voice of feminism for thier respective companies. Both are considered the most powerful hero in thier universe. In Supergirl's case, it's the DC TV universe on CW rather than the cinematic universe, but in many ways that make her just as big a deal. They both share the same colors. They both have the same powers. ( Flight, invulnerability, super strength, powerful energy blasts, etc.. Supergirl's powers come from converted solar energy rather than "cosmic" energy, but that's just splitting hairs.). Brie Larson even looks uncannily similar to Melissa Benoist. Supergirl just doesnt have the MCU / Disney multi-billion dollar media hype machine behind it, that Captain Marvel does.
