We've been told that the majority audience for The Drum is older people. But when will they appear as panelists? This was brought home to me with force last night as I watched a group of well informed, articulate young people wrestling with the problem of aged care. Why didn't it occur to management to include at least one older [over 70yrs] person who could add up date feedback from people discussing this very issue.
A woman I know has publlshed a book and has another ready to go; has driven a successful campaign to rescue a small regional picture theatre; actively participated in regional community life and, is now back in the metropolitan area and very active in her community. She"s 80+ years.
So many assumptions about older and, old age people are negative, and this is partly because we are never seen or heard except for occasional exceptional achievement.
