Sword Art Online Progressive Aria of a Starless Night the first movie reboot of the 12ep anime arc. How was it? Is it worth it? and How does it compare to the light novel? Alright starting with the first one How was it? Well the animation to me is acceptable for an anime movie it doesn't reinvent anything but it looks good and the sound effects really amplify it. For the story well, if you read the light novel you don't get any of that story (and Kirito) until basically an hour in. Then how was the first hour of just movie-created content? It's okay, it was entertaining we actually got Asuna character development and they introduced this new filler character Mito which was cool to see. When I first saw the second trailer to this movie I thought that Mito was going to be an empty character just to be there. But her being Asuna's friend made her fresh in a way and showed Asuna IRL with a friend. When we get to the light novel part of the story you will definitely get deja vu or it just feeling familiar same goes with the anime-only watchers (to an extent of course). This part of the movie really goes as expected just made better and with movie quality. Now Is it worth it? I'd say yes go for it! Especially if you're new to the series. This is the best SAO to ever be released on TV. Honestly, I wished I never watched the show and just watched this and then waited for the next movie. Okay now, How does it compare to the light novel? Really the only reason why I would say this is better is that you can actually see what's going on. In SAO and SAOP the world-building isn't very good so it can be hard to picture what it would look like to be there. But with this movie, you see everything to the dungeon, mobs, plains, character reactions, etc. This movie's visuals of the world of aincrad are just breathtaking the background art is incredible. Alright if this movie is so good why doesn't it have 5 stars? This is because there are definitely problems with this movie which could maybe get this down to 3 stars but I won't talk about them because of spoilers. I could talk some more but this is already too long so just go watch it whether it's just boring anime candy for you or not, you should watch this.
(12/16/21 Edit: I've been reading some other people's reviews, and it seems that anime only watchers don't like this movie because of all the changes (even though it's not SAO it's SAOP). So if you for some reason really love the original series and only love it you might not like this movie!)
