The most triggering, infuriating movie I think I have ever seen.
I have always loved Hitchcock. I've always been a big fan, but what an awful, stupid movie. Terrible acting and script, awful "representation" of trauma, rape and abuse/manipulation, etc. This movie that people keep calling "ahead of its time" is a movie fetishizing sexual trauma and "psychoanalysis" of abuse.
There's a line said by Sean Connery's character at the end when he's "confronting" Marnie's mother. He says that her mother's actions have made Marnie afraid to be touched by "any man," as if he hadn't forced her into marriage with him --- as if it's supposed to be shocking that a woman - who throughout the whole movie has shown her hatred and distrust of this man (Connery) - should be resistant to having sex with him... As if being forced to marry someone to keep yourself out of jail means that you should be happy to be physically with him. God damn this movie is a mistake.
