This period of Chinese history is so specific to Chinese people of a certain generation. The pain, helplessness and grit of the characters reflect a generation. While it’s great that more Asian actors are getting cast, it’s a shame they couldn’t recruit Chinese mainland actors, many of whom are brilliant. The show suffers as a result and hopefully it won’t be an opportunity for executives to say ‘Asian-led series don’t do well’.
