My daughter and I enjoyed the book. The plot was interesting. I think the ending was left open ended for the reader's own interpretation. For me it was a religious interpretation. "The messenger" was Jesus (the bank robber) who went to jail for all those people and went to jail for me. The "young man on the couch" is God, who has pre -written everyone's life story/ life book. And we are the jokers.
