I watched the trailer when it was released on Netflix and wasnโt drawn in from it (didnโt think twice about bypassing it). After hearing several people discussing it and talking about it online (very mixed reviews from both sides), I decided to watch it. I didnโt do any further research on what the film was about so I went into it with no expectations or info on what it was about.
Let me start by saying I hate horror films. โThe Exorcistโ is why Iโm a grown adult in her thirties and still needs a nightlight in every room of the house (every room). So the fact that Iโm a chicken s**t and also that most horror films have terrible storylines and mostly just want to scare people rather than have an actual decent movie, Iโve made a solid effort to avoid them as much as possible. I havenโt seen โA Quiet Place,โ โThe Awakening,โ Or โThe Fog,โ so when I read the negative reviews comparing the films I have zero concept of their viewpoint. I also had no clue this was a โscary movie,โ so the fact I didnโt turn it off and stop watching after the first 20 mins is amazing because it was an intense intro! Thankfully, the movie let me catch my breath and kept me intrigued just enough to become invested and keep watching. I think it was worth it.
The acting was great. Each character played their roles so very well which really made it easy to connect. The movie was entertaining throughout, but there were lulls, so I can see where anyone who was looking for an edge of your seat thriller would be disappointed. For me the slower parts kept me interested in the characters and not just the horror aspect. So it made for a good story as well. I did have some unanswered questions at the end and did think some things couldโve been more deeply explained. I felt that aside from watching this one group of people go through this โexperienceโ only gave their perspective and didnโt really explain anything else outside of that. I feel like there shouldโve been more info about the โdemon/creaturesโ and how it all came about.
Overall I enjoyed it and will recommend it to others. My only prayer is that they donโt try to come out with a sequel. They did good. Couldโve done better. Please donโt push it.
