Moana 2 is an exciting, a bit dark and has very addictive songs. However, the story line is a bit repetitive and lacks the initial struggles like Moana 1 has.
So spoiler alert if you havenโt watched the movie. I understand why it could be a fan favorite for most people and I understand why people are disappointed with this movie.
The strengths of this movie it is captures a new light and different exciting challenges that Moana has to face. It also dives deeper into Moanaโs and Mauiโs relationship and gives some character development . This is seen when Maui was comforting Moana after she just witnessed a near death experience with one of her crew members Moni, the song โCan I get a Chee Hoo?โ And the last scene in the Movie when Moana almost dies. In these scenes Maui shows a deep connection with Moana and shows empathy and compassion despite being egotistical.
Another thing the Movie did well is the song โGet lostโ and showcases glimpses of Matangiโs personality. Though out the beginning of the Moana 2 we see Mauiโs initial struggles trying to get his hook from bat girl aka Matangi. Through these interactions we perceive her as manipulative and the initial Villain in the story. However, when the song โGet lostโ comes we learn thats not the case and Matangi is willing to risk her life in order to help Moana lift the curse from Nalo. We also get different hints though out the song as Matangi qoutes villains from different Disney movies who pretend to be good in order to get what they want, it contrasts slightly to Matangiโs motives and shows she is not actually the villain. Which is quite interesting coming from Disney.
Now this movie is pretty good its lacks a certain aspect that made Moana 1 so popular in the first place. In the first movie we learn right away Moanaโs inner struggles and her desire to sail the ocean seas. Yet in Moana 2 we donโt really get to see that struggle that she faces because she has to maintain her fatherโs approval. Through different songs Moana touches on her inner struggles stating that โwill I lose myself in between to whats unknown if I go beyondโฆโ . But at the end of the song she quickly gains the confidence to sail the oceans and stop Naloโs curse.
Another thing is the aftermath of Moniโs near death, Moana was left traumatize. And though past flashbacks she thinks she will be the reason there story ends. But as we see in the Movie she quickly gains her confidence back from her peers like Maui and we donโt see the initial struggle we are craving for. The reason why other Disney movies have gotten so popular was they had the same struggle of wanting to do this but also faces the struggles of their parents or society. This common pattern lets us as viewers empathize with the protagonist and actually grow some common trait that makes us want to continue watching.
Lastly the Movie also lacks in Moanaโs character development. Though out the movie we barely see any character development or arch with Moana if so it was quite brief and doesn't touch with the viewers as well as the first movie. The movie is also kind of repetitive in terms of the storyline with the first movie but overrides it with its unique and distinctive qualities,
Overall, the movie has multiple fun and distinctive qualities that brings out empathy in different characters like Maui but lacks in character development and has somewhat a repetitive storyline.
