Amy Adams and Glenn Close did amazing work in their portrayals of Mammaw and Beverly (Mom). They nailed the complexity of dysfunctional family relationships and addiction. It is a disturbing movie, but for all the right reasons. The life that Vance and his sister had did not have to happenโit was based on โadultsโ not making good decisions. Children should not have to grow up this way. It would be extremely triggering for people who have had similar backgrounds, but I think they can draw strength from it. The book is a tribute Vance did for his grandmotherโs resilience, but it is also encouraging that his mom, Beverly, does eventually go through recovery. It would be helpful to know more about what happened to get her there.
