Other ignorant Local carriers felt under threat because the camels and their drivers could travel faster and through all manner of conditions. White Australians thwarted the cameleers with unions and members of Parliament from the Bourke region legislated to prevent anyone of colour being allowed into Australia. I believe these efforts paved the way to the White Australia Policy and ingrained into the population the racist attitudes that sadly still continue to pervade Australia today.
