AMARAN: Biopic of Major Mukund Varadarajan
This is my review of the film as a Tamil Defence personnel.
As a defence personnel, I have always wanted to watch a movie which highlights the actual struggles we experience everyday. All of them just show the guns, explosions, people barking orders and some parade. Amaran has done a little extra by showing us how our work-life balance actually is. There was a scene in which Mrs Indu tells Maj Mukund that their daughter completely believes that her father is in the iPad and he should come home soon. To which he calmly replies he will try his best. Surely, all defence personnel can relate to this feeling.
Lets come to the four pillars of this movie. Firstly, SK.
In all of his previous films, we have seen SK as an actor/comedian only. But this movie has definitely made him a true hero. SK has leveled up considerably in his physique and acting skills.
Secondly, Sai Pallavi. She is just phenomenal. She truly embodied Mrs Indu. When she receives the news of Mukund's death, she breaks down completely but then she remembers he told her not to cry even if he died. In that scene, she captured all our hearts.
Thirdly, music. GVP has done a tremendous job in this movie as well. When all of us were happily grooving to "Hey Minnale", "Vennilavu Saaral Nee" was the one which actually made us cry.
At last, the direction. Director did a great job by showing us the unexplored struggles of Defence Personnel. At the start there is a scene where the company is ambushed. Everyone drops everything they are doing, their training kicks in and get rigged up in no time to encounter them. At the training academy, SK tells Sai Pallavi he is very very tired and needs to sleep very badly. That scene is very accurate. The initial cadets go through hell to get that army physique and mentality. Your routine is not fixed at all and any free time you get, you just want to sleep. Another accurate depiction of our military life would be when SK is injured he is given sick leave. Only during that period can we see SK actually enjoying time with his family. Rest of the movies all their conversations would be on phone only.
I would say this is the best militarily accurate movie I have watched so far and wish this movie far more succes. I just hope Bollywood learns something from us and make a biopic of Maj Mukund's buddy Sepoy Vikram. He was a fourth generation soldier in his family and he deserves more.
