The story is set in the days when there was a big 'class' divide in Britain. The story highlights how the prejudices, thoughts, words, and actions of some people can affect lives of others. The scene, where the inspector leaves the Birling home after questioning all in the family, sums it all up. Our lives are all intertwined, if we don't take care of each other, help those in need, love those who are unloved, and uplift the downtrodden, there will be a day when we will learn our lessons the hard way. This is so relevant even today (May-June 2020) as we see all around in the United States where there is an outcry for police reforms and uprising against the systematic oppression of non-whites in our society.
