I think Roald Dahl would be pleased.
There were fun and magical moments...and not overdone.
The story is charming and whimsical.
All the sets and costuming were the right amount of color and lighting.
The music is fun.
I thought the acting was well done. There was a combination of overexaggeration and drama that worked for this film.
And, of course, there were scumbag, villainous characters...as there always should be in a Roald Dahl story...that caused great conflict and the desire from the viewer to want to see the good guys win and the bad guys get caught.
I thought the writers did a good job keeping the themes of the original story. They didn't change anything that would compromise Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but more so added onto the story with this prequel.
Overall I really enjoyed this film. I would say that it is a crowd pleaser, but maybe not a critics pleaser. But who cares about the critics anymore, anyway?
