By 35% into the novel I had read about infertility, in vitro fertilization, a clotting disorder, endometrial cancer, the fanatic religious right, divorce, alcoholism, mental illness and a lesbian relationship and marriage. I’m emotionally drained and admit to skipping portions of this novel because my 87 year old brain can only handle so much trauma. BUT…. Ms. picoult is an excellent writer with the ability to tell all sides of a situation with the hard truths, compassion and even handedness they deserve. This is not an easy read but it is one that i’m grateful she was able to write in the hope that it reaches someone who might be helped, encouraged and expanded by it.
