A fantastic look into the madness horror and comradeship of ww1, Sam Mendes use of almost continuous filming aids the overall story. Two young n.c.o.s picked for what looks like a suicide mission. Mendes team superbly at times shows in such intricate detail the condition and emotional turmoil, I was impressed at the sucking mud and spotting pieces of military kit half buried to become relics alongside the lost dead in craters in no man's land.
Randomly coming across other troops was spot on as disarray was evident everywhere.
The village scene was amazing especially the use of flares by the germans, the protagonists were great. Portraying battle scarred young men is a hard task the two guys did really well. I don't want to reveal much more as that would spoil your watching, I believe this is a movie that needs revisiting at least three time as you can't really take everything in one sitting, well done Sam Mendes and team a great authentic piece of filming.
