Wes Craven's "Scream" is my #1 favorite horror movie of all time. As much as I love many of Wes Craven's other work (most notably "A nightmare on Elm Street"), It's clear that he was definitely on his "A game" when he created "Scream". It's 90's horror at it's best! As much as I love "the scream franchise" as a whole, I always go back to the first film the most. Since this is the 90's, it has the hip post meta / self aware vibe that every horror movie was doing around the time (after "Scream" came out) and I love the 90's for that. It has so many scary and Iconic moments. Most notably the iconic and famous "What's your favorite scary movie?" opening of the film. "Scream" has so many relatable characters who loves watching horror movies as much as I do and are fully aware of the rules of horror movies and they play along and poke fun at the cliches that many of them are famous for. Such as "never have sex", "never drink or do drugs" (despite Randy was "clearly" holding a beer when he was telling the rules), never say "I'll be right back", never run up the stairs instead of walking out the front door, etc."
Believe it or not, "Scream" was a very important film for the horror genre. Not only it was the groundbreaking hit thriller in the box office back in 1996, but it also did a lot for the horror movie industry since a lot of franchises from the late 80's to early 90's were going downhill with either terrible sequels, low money makings in the box offices, or negative responses from critics and horror fans. Since "Scream" was such a huge hit when it came out, in the late 90's to early 2000's, many other horror movie makers started copying what "Scream" did and made their own films out of it. We had other movies like "I know what you did last summer" and it's sequel "I still know what you did last summer", "Urban legend", "Urban legends: Final cut", "Cherry falls", "The faculty", "Disturbing behavior", The rage: Carrie 2", and even some popular horror franchises had some post "Scream" sequels like Child's play and Halloween with "Bride of Chucky", "Halloween H20: 20 years later", and "Halloween: resurrection" (which happens to be one of my biggest guilty pleasures of horror movies). The last meta horror movie we had was 2012's "The cabin in the woods".
But most of all, "Scream" gave birth to one of horror's famous icons. Ghostface! I love Ghostface. I find it scary because you don't know who he (or she) is or what their motives are (until their revealed at the end of the movie). Also what makes ghostface even more scary is that it could be anybody. Somebody your close to, your boyfriend/girlfriend, your best friend(s), your sibling, your family member, heck maybe even a good chance of your own parents being Ghostface; and as Randy said "There's a formula to it. A very simple formula! EVERYBODY'S A SUSPECT!" So, the Scream films (most notably the first film) are always filled with lots of suspense and keeping us, the audience, guessing till the very end who the ghostface killer is. With many twists and unexpected surprising reveals.
So as you know, I absolutely adore "Scream"! It's my #1 horror movie of all time and obviously I have no complaints about it. I give Wes Craven's "Scream" an absolute five telephones out of five!
