I’ve been a huge fan of the book series my whole life. So I was excited when they announced that it would be made into a series. If you’re a fan of the books, be prepared to be disappointed. Out of the gate, several of the characters’ races have been swapped in what I can only assume is an uber-liberal attempt to bring social justice to a work of fiction that did not need to be touched. The show creators turned the main characters’ home village of Emond’s Field into a cultural melting pot that resembles the racial mix of Houston....or New York. Instead of three male “taveren” as appears in the books, they added a fourth - a female character - I guess to balance out the three males. The storyline has generally followed the books so far... mostly. But overall, the break from the literary work is a huge disappointment. The book championed a matriarchal society with different cultural epicenters where each race was represented - each with its own culture, strengths and weaknesses. It was wonderful. Not so here. The Lord of the Rings was a huge hit - they strictly stuck to the format in the novels. This seems like Hollywood’s attempt to rework Robert Jordan’s masterpiece into... something else.
