Strangely affecting, the film only really gets going once it moves to interior China. The pacing is deliberate and unhurried, but that lets the color in. The performances are believable and intricate, and one comes away with a wistful yearning for experiences one has when caught out of one’s element. Diana Rigg is delightful in a heartfelt supporting role. Well worth the time.
