I played on Caprica and Aquaria (Marr/ Phalen_Marr for those who may have known me). Met/ flew with great people--some jerks too, but far less. I was already a big fan of the show. So, the music/ story and graphics enticed me to play, and the the flying mechanics made me stay--even before adv flight controls.
My niche was flying fast and shooting Novas/ Ruiners--slow, heavy hitters with no auto tracking. It was pointblank and sudden--very cat and mouse in a dog fight. Often, I was asked by the guy I just took out, "What did you hit me with?" because they couldn't understand why they just got one-shotted. So, I got into the habit of typing in the chat..."GF...they were Novas". lol...
It took lots of patience and time to refine my technique because I had to be unconventional. However, when the ruiners/ novas hit--the guttural thud--was like a gut blow that made you wince and say..."Damn that had to hurt." There was nothing like it. Landing 4 or 5 novas on a fighter moving at a different speed, at an off angle, in 3-D space, while flying at 139 was balls to the wall. It wasn't easy, but that's what made it fun.
Of course I got mine handed to me on more than one occasion. However, that was part of the fun. Veteran players became friends even if they were enemies. We knew each other and learned to respect what each person's skill brought to the game. I loved it. I've played other space combat games since, but nothing has ever compared. It made me laugh. It was nothing short of addicting.
I'm a private pilot in real life. I flew a lot in my younger years. However, it became too expensive with family responsibilities. I miss real flying. Yet, when I flew my viper/ raider there were times I felt that rush again.
I miss the barrel rolls, the slide, the Harpie/ Aurora speed boost and flying upside down over an unsuspecting guy mining rocks...just to mess with him and get his attention even though a stationary target would have been easier to hit. Then, the fight was on, and the one-shot thud marked another successful hit...lol...Still makes me smile and laugh today. I haven't found anything like it.
Why? I have no answer.
I'd play it again in a heartbeat. ;0)
