Loved the original (even with its flawed, out of pocket end reveal and Marlene King's selfish need to be a step ahead of her fans even if it makes no sense for the plot). I rewatch the show once in a while, because the main characters have great chemistry, their outfits are fun, and the cliffhanger endings of each episode keep you on your toes. I also enjoyed the Perfectionists spinoff for the interesting story and new characters, and I wish the show went on. This new twist on the story is pretty disappointing, even though only three episodes are out at the moment of me writing this. I really can't tell whether the acting is bad or the writing is bad; this gives me the same cringe factor as Riverdale where the actors have to do what they can with the nonsensical script. There is a lot of out of character behavior. In one scene, the shy twin suddenly gets all aggressive and assertive and comes up with the plan to dump a bucket on the main character at the dance. Our main character goes back to school the day after her mom is murdered in episode one only to comment/agree with a comment on how weird it is that another character is already at school the day after her own sister's traumatic death in episode three). The character intros are so forced, and dialogs go something like: "Hey, Imogen." "Hello, Mouse." Very stiff writing, every sentence ends with the name of the person who is being talked to. People don't talk like that in real life! The costume choices are interesting, I really can't tell what decade we're in. Also, all the girls suddenly become friends in episode one and are willing to do some pretty reckless stuff and cover for one another right away. This is just as disappointing as the Gossip Girl reboot; HBO, come up with something new to spend that huge budget on, cause these reboots ain't it.
