I appreciate they tried to reimagine the villains and the Harvey Dent part of the show was good.
Batman has been going a long time, but there is a reason certain characters are iconic and became loved and when you mess with that core of what the audience expects and what they love, it can fall flat. It often did here.
The female penguin just felt forced and lazy, put there for audience surprise and shock, to get people talking, but when it boils down to it, by making the penguin a female it offered nothing new. The penguin just looked like the regular penguin but taller and in drag. It was lazy design as well.
Also Harley Quinn not being the other half to the joker and the way she was, was just boring. All the fun and mayhem was taken out of the character. Joker and Harley are DCs power couple to me and this interpretation did not work for me. I liked Clay Face, Flass and Bullock, but I didn't overly like the supernatural angle in some episodes. It got a bit scooby doo in places. There is a lot of time spent on characters like Montoya and Commisioner Gordon and they are actually quite boring through out.
I have no issue with race swapping characters and enjoyed commisioner Gordon in The Batman. However there has to be a compelling reason to do so, and something new to bring to the table and for me the way these characters were written they would be dullards, no matter their skin tone.
I am fully intersted in having diversity in the entertainment space, however you still have to tell a good story and entertain and that is where some things go wrong for me generally in Hollywood.
I would rather see classic characters stay true to their audience expected look and feel for the most part, not to say someone can never diverge, but mostly stay true to what fans of franchises know and love and I want to see new characters being brought into the worlds and franchises like Batman, that fans can grow to love alongside the pre established.
You can aim to please both audiences. Thats the challenge for Hollywood and Disney, warner Bros etc. It would take writers and artists actually having to be creative for their money, rather than rehashing, or reinventing what long term fans love.
With the tease at the end I will likely check out the 2nd season if it happens, but the pacing needs to be better and give Batman some trials and jeopardy to go through.
