Despite what the critics, conservatives, and 1989 movie purists spew with their hate about the production of this movie, this new version of The Little Mermaid is really beautiful. The scenery is artful and immersive, showing especially during the underwater scenes as the camera takes you on a journey in the ocean.
This version of the movie takes place on a Caribbean island, rather than the Mediterranean and the colors here are bright and sunny, compared to some of the underwater scenes where it occasionally gets a little too dark to see at times due to the filters. Either way, both worlds have their share of lively scenes. The story is the same as the 1989 version, so at least the audience familiar with the concept knows what to expect in terms of storyline.
The costumes are also great to look at with a pleasing color palette and different styles representing each character.
The cast diversity is also nice to see, with actors of different ethnicities (and not *just* because Ariel was cast with a black actress). Melissa McCarthy makes a fabulous Ursula and Javier Bardem does the same for King Triton. Jonah Hauer-King's Eric looks like he's stepped out from the pages of a romance novel. The CGI animals also looked flattering on screen and the actors played their characters very well.
I would be glad to watch this again and purchase a Blu-Ray of it when it becomes available.
