Very interesting; the author is clearly an expert researcher and historian. Rarely have I almost stopped reading an interesting book because of how poorly it's written though. The lack of good grammar makes many of the sentences hard to understand unless you read them a couple of times and try to deduce the meaning. Much shorter sentences would help a lot (there are numerous sentences of at least 50 words), as would more commas (or better placement of commas).
