A fantastic cast, incredible cinematography, an intriguing subject, all obliterated by a truly absurd, pointless, and implausible ending. It was a little “preachy” (ha!) throughout, but that might have been overcome were it not for the final plot twist. What on earth was the point of that last bit of silliness? If the elected pontiff had revealed he was gay, or even transgender, with a little more character development, there might have been a message. Instead, they opted for a whimpering compromise that spoiled the whole film.
