I watched SINNERS after being introduced to the movie in a lengthy, intelligent, & thoughtful opinion piece/review written by Starlette Thomas who saw the movie four times. The piece was published in the Oct/Dec 2025 edition of GOOD FAITH magazine.
Had I not read the article, I would never have taken the necessary time to view the movie. The article inspired my interest & gave me a foundation for understanding the movieโs intended meaning, at least from the author โs point of view. Otherwise I would have had no desire to watch a horror movie & no basis for
understanding & interpreting it.
However, that is not to say that I enjoyed it or that I agree with the authorโs interpretation. I do think some of her views are worthy of consideration as being accurate or at least one way of seeing the movieโs underlying meaning.
I donโt appreciate the graphic violence in many
of the scenes & can understand why many viewers found the movie boring & meaningless.
Starlette Thomasโ states that โRyan Cooglerโs SINNERS makes an unapologetic theological statement against white-body supremacy.โ
She also writes that โThe vampires in Sinners
are not just monsters; they represent historical and ongoing forces of colonialism and cultural
appropriation. They crave the vitality, music, and community of African American culture,
seeking to take it for themselves.โ
As I stated earlier, Thomas has written an
intelligent & thoughtful review. Definitely an interesting read!
