So, what did I like about the film? I was really happy that it told a new and different story about the Holocaust (not throwing shade at any other Holocaust films). In addition, this sheds light on a topic that I didn’t know about, and I’m sure you didn’t know about. More than just Jewish people died during the Holocaust and their stories need to be shared. We don’t see many portrayals of how the Holocaust was layered, but this film is disrupting that narrative.
The reason why so many Oscar bait movies are centered around the Holocaust is because white people can see themselves as the victims and the heroes. Non Jewish and Non German actors can be cast without that much backlash. What was even more refreshing than seeing Leyna as a victim of a Holocaust that affected so many people who weren’t white, was seeing the black WWII soldier at the end of the film. How many WWII films focus on American soldiers of color? Practically none! So, thank you Amma Asante for representing black people throughout history.
