My interest in reading actually began with Chris Carter’s “The Crucifix Killer”.
The elaborate descriptions of the victims and crime scenes were done so well it was easy to visualise and made me feel as if I were there myself.
The novel was well written, simple enough to read but not overly simple where I felt like I was reading a novel targeted at pre-teens.
The creativity that went into these crimes were impressive and I went on to read every other novel he has written since. It was what made me very particular about the type of crime fiction I choose to indulge in and it has been a struggle to find similar novels up to par.
I was excited for Carter’s newest addition and I hate to say it but it was so tame and bland, especially in comparison to the rest in the series.
The descriptions were vague, the crime was very cliché (incredibly overdone in films, TV series, and other novels), and the articulation throughout left me searching for my last braincell by the time I finished the read.
I’m very disappointed but I do wonder if this was rushed or due to the fact that Chris has set the bar so high (and subsequently conditioned us) in the past. I truly hope he is ok.
If he is to release another novel, I will absolutely give him the benefit of the doubt and give it a go but if it’s pale again I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d be both upset and disappointed, wondering if he might have hit a wall and begun his descend.
