I’ve played Fire Emblem since Awakening. And to be honest I’m very disappointed at how this game is being received.
Though I enjoyed 3 houses, the Monestary portion of the game was so ridiculously long and tedious. I just wanted to get back to the combat. I felt if I didn’t do the Monestary choirs then I would be hindering myself in combat. Engage fixes this problem significantly. The somniel acts as the Monestary and it really feels like I have control on what I do. There are various mini games and activities you can do that can help in combat but it isn’t needed. I had no issues running in, getting my supports, doing the trainings, then heading out to continue the story.
Speaking of the story, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think people need to remember that this is a Nintendo game at the end of the day. Nintendo isn’t known for their AMAZING stories rather they’re known for amazing gameplay and polish (except Pokémon) the story still had enough twists that even though I could kinda see coming still felt exciting. Felt very reminiscent of Awakening. Awakening had a somewhat predictable plot line though everyone raved about Awakening when it come out.
The characters are also incredibly likable in Engage. 3 houses felt that all 3 houses had different versions of the same type of characters. Some felt bland, others were just plain annoying or bad. Engage I feel has a cast of characters that has me wanting to go through the game again but with different units. There were just so many that I loved I couldn’t fit them all in one army!
Lastly I want to point out that 3 Houses was one of the most different Fire Emblem games that really changed the formula (next to Awakening and Fates) it was supposed to be different and it was. I loved 3 Houses. But I love Engage more because it took what made Awakening amazing and built upon it. Great characters, combat, pacing, and support/training segments. The addition of Emblems that are callbacks from past games are so exciting and fun! If 3 Houses was your first FE game and you loved it and weren’t a fan of Engage then you might just not be a FE fan considering this is how most the games were before 3 Houses.
