I read this book for the first time in 2015 as a freshman in high school, and it was my all time favorite book. I thought (and still think) the plot was very intriguing and that *most* of the characters had a level of depth which kept the reader emotionally involved & invested in a positive outcome. Previous readers of her’s know Colleen is an amazing author with a nearly perfect story-telling success rate, causing this book to stand out for its (still minimal) imperfections rather than its attributes.
A current re-read of “Maybe Someday” at the age of 21 was slightly disappointing. I’ve been making my way through Colleen’s books over the past month and was extremely excited to revisit this one, only to discover that it overall pales in comparison to many of her other books. However, on a larger scale, this book is still enjoyable and worth a read through.
Sydney, the female protagonist, lacks a level of depth in both her actions and emotions that just happened to be much more relatable to a teenage reader than an adult reader from my experience. Significant moments were overshadowed by Sydney crying at every turn or by a general annoyance towards the characters. I caught myself repeatedly wondering why they made everything so difficult on themselves!! It seemed the majority of the narration was focused on what the problems were rather than how to progress or solve them. I love a slow burn romance as much as any of Colleen’s readers may, but “Maybe Someday” took that trope to an extreme that leaves you on the verge of frustration by the last page. (you have to read the sequel “Maybe Now” to see even a chapter’s worth of the protagonists’ long awaited relationship beyond a sexual level) Despite all of the characters in this book being well into adulthood, their actions were more accurately reflective of a littttle less maturity than is expected.
