I think you have to be ready to read this book. Otherwise, no way. In essence, a series of confederate and remote farm vignnettes, from those tired of that savage and lawless war. But a real insight into life then and there.
Shocking in its use of unusual words - jouncing, wen, skeps, sumac, collop, hinny, scofflaw etc. "All through the herd, spavins and bots and heaves to be treated.." and "tops of the palings had been cribbed away to splintered nubs.." A very memorable, insightful and rather sad book.
