I never leave reviews but I'm compelled to. Deeply moved, fantastic acting. Storyline is absolute hook. I can't remember the last time I cried in a movie... and it's the best kind of being moved - not the type of crying that follows weeping scenes or huge tragedy, but the soft swelling of tears that echo those of the actors at their most confused, most lonely, most hopeful and most anguished.
Tragedy aside (there's really no other way where period dramas are concerned), cast the trappings of luxury and politics aside, what the characters felt were very human and relatable. Life in the Palace is lonely - loyalty, submission, gratitude, duty, lust, love, jealousy and hate are all mixed up. I can't say for sure who felt what was real, except for the King's feelings.
Beautiful piece. Thought provoking, progressive and bold in its sexual depiction. Watch by yourself, it deserves full attention without commentary.
Ps. Anyone else spotted Song Joong-Ki and Lim Ju-hwan? :) I didn't like joo jin-mo in Empress Ki but here he was simply stupendous. Thanks for reading!
