I'm giving it three stars because so many other people seem to rate it highly. It sounds as though one ought to rate it highly. But I'm reminded for some reason of the day our 4th grade teacher, talking about dental hygiene. "which toothpaste do you use?", she asked. One by one the class replied, "Colgate". I began to feel uneasy. Was this a trick question? Would I be made to repeat grade 4. I was determined to answer truthfully. "Ipana!" I would say forcefully. But the teacher had all the answers she needed. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to leap upon the pyre of unpopular opinion. Now where was I? Treacle Walker. Yes. Perhaps one needs a particular kind of cognitive ability to appreciate it. I read it, with little understanding, stopping about half way through with an uneasy feeling that I'd had a stroke. I gave up. I went back to "Good Omens". Now that's a bit of nonsense I can get my Ipana polished teeth into.
