This movie is an absolute disappointment, both as a Studio Ghibli movie, and as a movie in its own right. There is no clear character development for Anna who starts off the movie as a rude and moody teenager, but all of the sudden becomes forgiving for no clear reason. On top of that, Marnie's continuous comments about loving Anna and the fact that Anna is her little secret are a little too reminiscent of what an older person might say to a child if they are grooming them. There are also a bunch of other problematic characterization decisions, especially the part where no one seems bothered by the fact that Anna is twice found passed out in a bush. The only redeeming quality of this movie is the fact that it was well animated. Besides that, I was a complete and utter failure and I have no idea why so many people actually liked it.
